Description Jesse Dean is a recently discharged soldier who had a rough upbringing, but found God because of his wife and is now totally devoted to his faith. He and his wife move to Philadelphia so he can take a new job as an outreach leader at an old church whose membership has been declining. Just as he starts connecting with the community, he discovers that directly across the street from the church is an abortion clinic. He goes to the pastor and several others in the church trying to get their help--to no avail. One day he's going around his everyday routine when a personal tragedy strikes; this brings him to the point that he starts to take action himself, but the more involved he gets, the more resistance he gets from those in the church and community, and from his wife, who thinks his actions will get him fired or jailed. Finally he must make a choice: take the easy way out and back off, like everyone wants him to do; or face a major confrontation that will require him to put everything on the line--his job, his marriage, and his freedom? This film encourages people to stand up for what they know is right, particularly as it pertains to taking God's truths into society to address social issues. It addresses the spirit of retreat as it pertains to engaging the culture that has developed within the Church.

This was the first time I saw a film starring Christian Slater and it wasn't that good. He's not in it, and that's not a bad thing, as he's pretty cool anyway, but in this film, he's more of a sidekick. It's almost as if he's the main character. But hey, he did say something in the film, and I can't remember what it was. I'll bet you can figure it out. Anyways, this movie was filmed in Hungary, and there is some good acting in this movie. The Hungarian actor (whom I'll call Mr. B) does an awesome job, and is a great actor. So if you like him, check this film out. *SPOILER* Oh and this is not a good film, I'm sorry, but it's really not. I'm giving it 7 stars, because it's worth watching once. That's all I have to say about that. OK, I have to say something about the film itself. OK, first of all, I know that this is going to sound like a cop-out, but the story, if you can call it that, is very slow, and I'm not even going to spoil the film for you. In fact, if you have seen the film, you already know what happens. The only good thing I can say about the film is that it's beautiful. The cinematography, the soundtrack, the actors, the locations, everything. I'm sorry, but it's just not a good film. *END SPOILER* So now that I have given the film a rating of 7 stars, let me give you a rundown on the film itself. If you're not a fan of Christian Slater, then you might be interested in checking out the film, or you might want to check it out because it's good, but if you like Slater, then you won't be disappointed.

It is not uncommon to find a movie with extremely high scores. The common denominator is usually just a lot of hype. One of the most common criticisms is that a film is too "bland." "It's not like it's supposed to be in the trenches with the soldiers," one viewer complained. "It's supposed to be funny." The answer, of course, is to say that that is exactly what the film was intended to be. It's supposed to be a comedy. There are some things that just aren't funny, and certain ones that don't need to be. This film, in that sense, is very different. At the very least, it is a drama with an emphasis on how the comedy can be kept up as the situation becomes more dire. That way, one doesn't just have to take the film seriously, but also can't help but laugh at what happens. The humor is not particularly dark, although there is a dark element that is not that uncommon in dramas, and it is a comedy that is less dark and more lighthearted. One of the themes is friendship, which the film explores, but also friendship in conflict, which it does not. It also explores the impact of war on friendships, both friend and foe. The film is at its best when one can watch it as a comedy. At its worst, it becomes a film that gets a little too serious, because you cannot help but laugh at what is happening, even though the dramatic moments are left behind. One of the points that is emphasized most is that all of the men are bad, because they don't realize they are bad. A character makes the same comment repeatedly, and it's hard not to chuckle at it. The actors are all very good in this film, and even if it isn't the best movie ever, it is an excellent comedy. A must see for any person with a sense of humor.
