The short film festival has become an institution, and it's been an enjoyable time for many of us in the Academy. We've had a lot of great films this year. We've had films about the working conditions in the mines, about women in the world of sex work, about the global youth labor crisis, about the challenges of asylum and refugee status, about the unique social impact of global warming, about the abuse of human rights in the global financial system, and many more. The festival has really come into its own, and in the process has helped to build a strong foundation for the future of the Academy. I would be remiss if I did not highlight one of the best short films I've seen this year, from a film student, the work of Oliver Wyman. The film, entitled "Sierra Leone: A Year of Confrontation" is an insightful and sensitive examination of the devastating impact of the Ebola epidemic on Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world. It's a deeply personal story of a mother and her children and their struggle to survive, and it tells a story of hope and the strength of people. Oliver Wyman, a former UN Peacekeeping Mission in Sierra Leone, was chosen to direct the film. His artistic and technical achievements were evident in every frame of the film. The film is told from the perspective of a mother, a journalist, and a doctor, all of whom have experienced the Ebola epidemic. Their stories are connected through a powerful relationship that develops between the mother and the doctor. It's an amazing film, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the field of international humanitarian crisis. I was also very impressed by the work of the actor, and the cinematographer, who both worked on the film and created a beautiful, dream-like film with the music. The short film festival is an institution. It's been a great time for all of us, and I look forward to seeing the work of this talented group of filmmakers continue to be showcased.
