I first watched this film back in 2005, and had no idea what I was in for. I'd only heard of the story and a few clips of the film, but I was intrigued by the promise of this movie. I've been a fan of screenwriter John Sayles since the original Cuckoo's Nest, and his work on this film was a huge step up from his earlier efforts. I don't think there is anything wrong with the film itself, but I do think that the story and characters were a bit too one-dimensional and uninteresting for my tastes. The main character was a real enigma. I found it hard to identify with him, and I didn't really understand the emotional turmoil he went through. I was also quite taken back by the scene where he came face-to-face with the real murderer. It was almost like the director was trying to get me to sympathize with the main character, but I was just too torn up for it to work. There was just not enough to make me feel for him. I was also quite disinterested in the ending. I didn't feel anything for the murderer at the end, and it just felt like a cop-out to me. I just felt like it was a bit too abrupt. I was also a bit disappointed with the music. I was a fan of John Sayles' score, and I was really looking forward to hearing some of his work. I also liked the acting. But I just didn't feel that the story was gripping or interesting enough for me to give this film a high rating. I did enjoy it, but I just didn't think it was anything special. It's not a bad movie, but it's not an excellent film either. I would definitely recommend it, but I'd rather give it a lower rating than a high rating.
