Description With his family grappling with extreme poverty, forever indebted to their ruthless landlord, the sad twelve-year-old boy, Zain, is forced to fend for himself in the squalid and overcrowded slums of Beirut. Unable to save his eleven-year-old sister, Sahar, from an uneasy arrangement, Zain will soon find himself all alone in a faceless city, ending up at a small amusement park to befriend another lost soul: the Ethiopian cleaner and mother of one, Rahil. But, in this grim and hostile world, there is no room for dreamers--and as a horrifying discovery is the last straw--a rabid desire for retribution possesses Zain and his blood-thirsty knife demands justice. Who is to blame when love becomes hate, and life turns into an unendurable torment?

Elya Novalis's "Bitter Moon" is a stunningly elegant film that stands apart from the usual horror movies of its time. It is a film of beautiful imagery, a story of tragedy and a subtle, but powerful, political message about the implications of living in a totalitarian society. The film focuses on the two protagonists, Erkan and Kaya, who are lovers in a time of mutual passion. Their lives are entangled with the fate of the country, the Flemish province of Flanders. The plot centers on Erkan, who has been in prison for many years and has become a bitter, passive man. Kaya is his younger sister and the only reason that they have met in the first place. Kaya, who has a sense of responsibility for her younger sister, tries to work for the rehabilitation of Erkan. She is passionate about her work and sees the need for a better future for her sister. She is also quite passionate about Erkan and thinks that he has become a good man. Erkan is not willing to hear her opinions, but he is not completely devoid of emotions. He works for a state and is suffering from a strong emotion. He has an emotional breakdown after a visit to the mortuary where he learns of the death of his younger sister. Kaya is interested in Erkan's politics and sees the possibilities of a political solution. She also has an emotional attachment to Erkan. Kaya tries to change Erkan's personality and to find a better future for his sister. She is convinced that Erkan's work for the government is the only way that he will be able to be able to take care of his sister. She also does not accept Erkan's mother's opinion about Erkan's work for the state and about Erkan's working conditions. Erkan feels that his sister is too weak to cope with the responsibility of being the family member of the government. In a very significant scene, Erkan comes to realize that Kaya has a strong desire to be a mother. She feels that her child is a liability and that she would rather be the mother of a young man who is fit to be a father. He is a promising man, who is always ready to fight and who has the potential to become a great leader. His mother does not approve of his work for the state and feels that she does not want to be his mother. The film is a work of art that will become one of the most memorable in German cinema.
