I've been a huge fan of the Canadian film industry for years, and I've been on a roller-coaster ride of watching the best films in Canadian history. "The Upside" is one of the best of all, not only because it has won many awards, but also because it is the best Canadian film of the year so far. The film is a true story about the series of events that lead to the death of a 14-year-old girl. I won't give much away about the plot, but suffice it to say that it shows the young girl who was struck by a car in Vancouver and was rushed to hospital where she died of her injuries. Then the parents were required to move to a new area of the country, and so the mother and father both left Vancouver for a new home in Ontario, along with a new baby and a new step-dad. The mother of the girl, who was of foreign birth, must now find a new job and new neighbours to raise her child. The film focuses on the mother and father of the girl, who are both really good friends, and who had been planning a surprise visit for her daughter. The film's most successful aspect is the acting. Kevin Corrigan and Lauren Holly do an outstanding job of portraying the character of a divorced, single, and broken family. It is very moving and sad at the same time, and it is a true-life tale of an awful tragedy that affected everyone in the family. This film is a must see for anyone who loves Canadian cinema, especially for Canadian students who can get a taste of the film industry in the USA. I hope everyone sees it, but if you have to wait until it is out on DVD, don't wait.
