John Woo's second film, the first being the legendary "The Killer", is now finally getting the mainstream recognition it deserves. In addition to the well-deserved praise it has received in the past, it is also a very entertaining film, and one that should be seen by anyone who has not seen it. First of all, the direction is again superb. It is not as if Woo is some novice, but he has proved that he can direct action scenes that are good enough to stand on their own without a sound track, and he does a great job here. Woo also benefits from a solid cast, including a very good performance from the always excellent Ben Kingsley, and some very good performances from Tony Leung and Tom Sizemore. Sizemore in particular is a great villain, and while he may not be the most charismatic of villains, he has a very good screen presence. The supporting cast also is very good, with Sammo Hung and Francis Ng both doing good jobs. The one weakness of the film is the acting. Most of the cast does not have a good enough screen presence to carry the film. However, Woo has shown in the past that he is not afraid to work with a lesser actor. However, since Woo's direction is better than average, I am not too concerned about the acting. The action scenes are good, and the cinematography is also good. The film is also very stylish, with a few impressive visual effects. This is not a film for everyone, but it is a very good action film that will keep you entertained for the entire two hours. My rating: 7 out of 10.
