The Making Of A Dirty Girl (2004) * (out of 4) Super-sized star-studded drama about a young woman (Gwyneth Paltrow) who decides to make a movie based on her childhood memories. Her mother (Cate Blanchett) is a strong woman who works hard at her career but is always looking for a break. Her father (Clive Owen) is very depressed and never seems to care about anything in his life. Her younger sister (Dakota Fanning) is obsessed with making a movie and is not concerned with her sister's problems. After the mother is brutally murdered, the sister comes up with a plan to kill her mother. This leads to an all out gang war between the siblings. The movie was directed by Jane Campion who has had a bit of a rough time with her last few movies. The most notable one being "The Virgin Suicides" which was a disaster. Campion seems to have an unfortunate tendency to play the same type of movie over and over again. The latest movie she's done is this epic drama about a young woman trying to make a movie about her childhood memories. I'll admit I enjoyed "The Making Of A Dirty Girl" because it has a lot of interesting things going on but it's not nearly as good as "The Virgin Suicides." The only reason I can think of to why it's not a great movie is because it's so short and there's not that much character development going on. The acting is great and the story is very interesting but I think Campion is a little too focused on the story. The movie's story is very interesting but I was never really on the edge of my seat because I felt like I was watching another movie. There were a lot of great things in the movie but there were also a lot of flaws. I think the biggest flaw is that it feels a lot more like a TV movie than a movie. There's not that much going on in the story. We never really know why the mother was murdered and it's hard to believe that her daughter would want to kill her. The movie is too short and it doesn't give the viewer enough time to get involved with the story. The movie also seems to take place in a very different time period and there's not a lot of drama in the story. I would recommend this movie but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
