From the stunning visuals and breathtaking soundtrack to the incredible story and animation that has been used to achieve a truly one-of-a-kind world, this is without a doubt, the best live-action film of 2011. The film opens with the story of a young boy named Minazuki. He lives with his parents in a small village in Japan. The boy is a rambunctious child who is obsessed with battles and samurai. One day, he discovers a sword on a shelf, and he plans to go on a quest to reclaim it. In order to do so, he must travel to an island where a ronin, with the help of a young woman named Taka, must stop a cursed sword from the evil Nagareboshi (played by Shun Oguri). As the film progresses, the story becomes more and more complex as the boy continues to learn the truth about his past, his past family and the purpose of his life. It is truly an epic film that will not be to everyone's tastes, but is well worth seeing. The voice actors that play the characters are well-cast, and they have created an engaging story that is easily understood. The story itself, however, is not as complex as I would have expected, and that is a shame because the story would have been so much more interesting if it had been more complex. I do not understand why a film with such a complicated plot could not have been made to be more complex. The film does a good job of portraying the struggle of a child in trying to understand his past, his family and his purpose of being alive. Overall, this is one of the best films of 2011, and it is definitely one of the best films of the year. Grade: A+
