As someone who grew up in my hometown, I saw firsthand the impact the music made on my life. Growing up in a small town in the South during the Great Depression, my family's music collection was comprised of local artists that were brought to my attention by my older brother. I quickly became a fan of the older musicians, some of which included the aforementioned Ritchie Valens. I quickly became a fan of the younger artists, including Jeff Beck, Paul Cézanne, Bill Haley and many others. This film, the most recent effort from the director, is based on an extensive interview with Mr. Jacobs. This documentary is certainly an excellent resource to bring to anyone interested in the music of the American South during the era in which it existed. Mr. Jacobs, who is interviewed at length, never holds back in his account of the influence of the music he grew up listening to on his life. He is very candid in his commentary, so the viewer is not left feeling that he is holding back from his personal story. He explains that this film is a "statement of how music can do things beyond music." He continues by explaining that music is not a sound, but rather a means to communicate with others. "Music is a means to communicate," he explains. "The expression of music is what it is about." This documentary may be difficult to understand, but it does not hold back from showing the music and its influence on those involved in the music industry. Mr. Jacobs describes the relationship between the young and the old, and the relationship between the music industry and the culture. He shows that musicians and singers are not commodities to be sold. The audience will find much that they can relate to in this documentary. As one might expect, the film is informative. It is a thorough examination of the music industry, and it is not a simple historical account. I have been a fan of Jeff Beck since I was a kid, and I had heard of Paul Cézanne in my younger years. I was delighted to learn that this film was based on the man's life, and I have been following Mr. Jacobs's efforts to make this documentary for several years. I am very pleased that the filmmaker was able to follow Mr. Jacobs's vision and carry this project through the good and bad years of the music industry. This is not only a story about music, but it is also about the people who made the music popular. If you want to know more about the history of the music industry, this is a must-see. It is a fascinating look at how music is still being made today. I highly recommend it.
